Edison Award Winner!

For our capstone project we built a machine that can test diamond codings through automated and repeated impact.

The tension loaded impact hammer is lifted through a Cam Follwer mechanism. The Cam is connected to a gear chain system which is powered by an electric motor. The whole machine is automated. One can set the number of impacts using the UI consisting of buttons, dials and an LCD screen.

My personal contribution was the design and build of all circuits, writing and deploying the code for the microcontroller, and designing and manufacturing the UI. Furthermore, I assisted in creating the overall mechanical design and helped manufacture the frame.

We ended up winning the Thomas Edison Award for the best Capstone Project. Thanks for everyone that voted for us.

The video below shows how to interact with the machine. After pressing the red button, the machine will complete 4 impacts onto the diamond coded metal under test.

Thanks to the great team. This was a ton of fun. Well done, guys!
